Cindy & Meghan McCain Pose For Pro Gay Marriage Campaign

Cindy and Meghan McCain, the wife and daughter of former Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, are, surprisingly, the centerpieces of a new California-based pro-gay marriage campaign dubbed NOH8, both appearing in ads with their mouths taped shut.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my mother for posing for the NOH8 campaign,” Meghan Tweeted Wednesday of the endorsement. “I think more Republicans need to start taking a stand for equality.”

NOH8’s Web site said of the coup endorsement: “The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot. Although we had worked with Meghan McCain before and were aware of her own position, we’d never really thought the cause might be something her mother would get behind.

“We have a huge amount of respect for both of these women,” the Web site said, “for being brave enough to make it known they support equal marriage rights for all Americans.”

The only McCain seemingly not on board with the stance is Senator John McCain, whose office said in a statement still “believes the sanctity of marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman.”

Said McCain’s office: “The senator chaired the effort to successfully pass Arizona Proposition 102, the Marriage Protection Amendment, and his opposition to gay marriage remains the same.”
