< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Joe Klein and the Weird Catholic Anti-Clinton Agenda
THE UNFORGIVEN Klein Less than an hour after his quote went online and Klein has already recanted. "I said something stupid last night.... I do believe that the media have been tougher on Hillary Clinton than on her opponents this year. I don't believe it has anything to do with Roman Catholicism and shouldn't have implied that it did. Stupid. I'm sorry," he writes. We're not even sure what point Klein was trying to make. Roman Catholics are indeed an influential voting bloc, having backed the winner of the national popular vote in every election since 1972, but Clinton's been beating Obama among Catholics by two to one or better. Regardless, he's already being taken to task by Swampland readers: "Since Chutzpah Joe has been wrong and 'stupid' about so many things (FISA, Libby, Iraq, McCain), we must accept that his continued presence as a prominent media commentator on all human events is not accidental."
