It was painfully apparent to anyone who watched disgraced pitcher Roger Clemens tell Congress that he'd never taken performance enhancing drugs that the man was lying through his teeth. Apparently, the U.S. government seems to agree with the evaluation: Congress has officially asked the Justice Department to investigate whether Rocket made false statements to the House committee when he testified back on February 13.

Reaction to Clemens' testimony at the time split right down party lines; Democrats were far more critical of Clemens, Republicans of alleged Clemens steroid injector Brian McNamee—though McNamee is not currently being investigated because the testimony of Clemens' former teammate Andy Pettitte corroborates most of his claims.

In a joint letter to the Justice Department, Reps. Henry A. Waxman (D-CA) and Tom Davis (R-VA) write, "We are not in a position to reach a definitive judgment as to whether Mr. Clemens lied to the Committee. Our only conclusion is that significant questions have been raised about Mr. Clemens's truthfulness and that further investigation by the Department of Justice is warranted." Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young winner who, like gambler Pete Rose, has obvious Hall of Fame bona fides but will now never make it to Cooperstown, is currently participating in spring training with the Houston Astros. Today he told reporters who attempted to talk to him about the steroids scandal that they needed to "get a life."
